We have been getting our little backyard garden ready for planting and the boys have been getting in on the fun. While daddy has been doing most of the hard work, tilling the ground and using the big people tools, the boys have been watching. One little boy in particular has been observing his daddy very closely.
Daddy was using the big garden trowel one day to turn the dirt and before long I looked outside and there was my two year old son with a potato masher. He was tilling the dirt just like his daddy. Okay, maybe it was not just like his daddy, but the potato masher looked strangely like the garden trowel and in his mind it was probably one and the same.
Daddy was moving dirt around the garden with a shovel one morning and I happened to look outside later to and catch a glimpse of that same two year old boy carrying around spoonfuls of dirt.
Our boys are always copying what we do, so I would make the assumption that they learn by observation. As I was thinking about this, I stopped to consider what they are observing on a regular basis. Am I being a good example?
The other thing that crossed my mind was the tools that I am giving my children. Am I equipping my boys with the tools they need to survive in life or are they going to need to seek an imitation like my son did with the potato masher and the spoon?
Am I modeling a true relationship with Jesus where my children can learn by the example that I set? Am I providing them with the tools that they need to have an authentic relationship with Jesus for themselves? This is my heart’s desire. What am I doing about it?
How can you give your sons the tools they need to have relationship with Jesus?
