Just Grab It By The Head

While making dinner this evening, I hear my hubby say to our son, “just make sure you grab it by the head“.
Ummm…just what are we grabbing by the head?
oh…that.

He loves to go outside and dig for bugs, creatures, buried treasure…

He just never expected to find this…

I have lost many containers to critters and creatures…
slugs, snails, salamanders, frogs, huge millipedes, a baby raccoon…
but this is a first.
He was thrilled at his unexpected find
and he thinks he’s going to keep him as a pet…
What crazy pet has your son come home with? More importantly, did you let him keep it?

Resurrection Eggs

Are any of you out there football fans? Are your hubbies (or sons) football fans? Crazy Superbowl fanatics?

Those feelings of excitement and anticipation…

That’s what our household is like at Easter.

Easter is like the Superbowl around here. It’s an amazing thing and we are so excited that it happened! We celebrate in a lot of ways but one of my kiddos favorites is with the Resurrection Eggs. Never heard of them? They are awesome! And I especially love them because it offers hands-on teaching of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

These eggs help tell the story starting with Jesus riding the donkey to the empty tomb. With each egg, my kiddos get to hold a piece of symbolic history directly related to their heritage.

There are 12 eggs total. I purchased mine from Family Life but you could easily make your own kit. Their contents are as follows from egg 1 to 12:

  • Little Donkey
  • Silver Coins (3)
  • Cup
  • Praying hands
  • Leather Whip
  • Crown of Thorns
  • Cross with Nails
  • Die
  • Spear
  • Linen cloth
  • Stone
  • Empty

Every year, my kiddos wait anxiously for the hands-on story telling of Easter. And I love that now my son is helping to tell the story to his little sister. And he is so excited to share this tradition with his soon-to-be little brother or sister!

Tell me, what are some ways your family celebrates Easter? Any special traditions? I would LOVE to hear them!

Day by Day, It’s An Adventure!

I homeschool my 2 children {ages 9 and 5, with one on the way }. I started homeschooling from the very beginning, and I have been lovin’ every step of this journey!
Though a few times I have dreamed considered thought about what life would be like if my littles left the house for school {can anyone say clean laundry!}
I love that I get to be home and raise them up and mold their wonderfully smart minds!
Everyday is an adventure for us. Whether we are learning a new concept, trying to tackle math, or the laundry, or just being explorers. We live our days as each one comes, and it’s so exciting to see what God has in store!
Some days, we get to be amazing “animal rescuers”! {Please meet Robert, the raccoon} This poor little guy was drowning in a pond near our house. My guy was cheering me on as I was praying I wouldn’t get bit, scratched, clawed, or eaten. He was thrilled! {while my gal was sobbing, hoping he wouldn’t drown and die!}
We get our daily, well ok, 3-4 times a week, exercise by walking to the library. These nature walks are usually full of exploring and discovering. With a whole lot of silliness thrown in for good measure.
That magnifying glass? Oh yes, well, he likes to burn things with it. Like leaves, mulch, grass, dead bugs.

When he is not busy being a boy doing science, he can be found embracing the adventure that life is.

What adventures have you led your boys on? Or rather, what adventures have they led you on?

I would love to hear about the adventures you have with your boys. Any great stories or amazing rescues?

A Beautiful Curveball

Ah, the start of a new year. Time for fresh beginnings and new resolutions.

My husband and I have never really done “New Years Resolutions”, but this year we decided to start our financial plan of paying off the rest of our debt. Quickly. We had our plan, our course of action. We were on a mission.

But then life happened.

For us, our new year started with some very BIG news. On January 1, 2011, at around 9am-ish. I found out we were expecting our third child!! I was so thrilled and excited. But also nervous and wasn’t sure how I was going to tell my husband. What with our recent plan of action, I wasn’t sure if this news would be stressful for him or not. (I’m very happy to say that he was over-the-moon joyed at the news!)

For the most part, most people look at a new year as a fresh new beginning, full of promise and excitement at the possibilities. I myself, have never really looked at January 1st as such. But that changed this year. This new year will bring a new baby, and because of that, it will also be filled with a new home, new car, new commute, and new schedules.

The first time we ever made a resolution, we were thrown this beautiful curve ball, making our resolution seem more difficult to obtain.

Talk about a total change. This was not our plan, this was not our goal. This will certainly not help us to save money.

But God’s plans are so much better than any resolution we could dream up. He has blessed us with new life in this new year and we are truly looking forward to everything He has in store for our growing family.

Maybe my outlook on New Years Resolutions will be different in years to come, maybe not.

But I do know that God is Gracious and His Blessings are abundant.

No matter what time of year it is.
