I closed my eyes and drifted away to another place and time. A time before the losses came. A time before I really even knew what stress was or what it meant to be weary.

But she knew.

Abandoned by her first husband, left with three hungry boy mouths to feed alone in the late 1930s, she returned home to a small town where she would face the judging eyes of people who didn’t understand divorce. Forced to return to her parent’s home and beg for help because she couldn’t even feed her own children now that he was gone.

By the time I was born, my grandmother had survived that early tragedy, but she remembered. A thing like that changes a person, becomes part of the fabric of their response to life. And while she was known for her strength, there existed a place in the heart of my grandmother that only music could heal.

So she played.

I used to listen to her, watch her at the piano for what seemed like hours. She played beautifully, though her hands where changed from arthritis and time. I remember the sound of her pinky ring, a replica of my dad’s college ring, hitting the keys when she played. The piano was her escape, her safe place, music her home.

That gift of music was passed on to nearly every member of my family. My dad and his two brothers, the very ones abandoned by their father as young boys, all embraced music in some form. My dad can play any instrument you put in front of him, by ear. I sing a little and play a little. My son, at just six years old, can read music and is learning to play the violin (or fiddle as we call it in the South). I’m thankful that sin is not the only thing passed from generation to generation.

And so as I listened to the piano music of David Nevue at the recent Relevant Conference, I closed my eyes and drifted back to my grandmother’s patio room. For a moment, it was her piano I saw, her hands that played. Lost in the peace that music brings, I felt my weariness lift and my spirits soar.

Music does that to me.

It’s one of the ways I can bring a little bit of sane into the crazy, a little bit of joy into the weary, a little bit of God into the mess.
