Truth for a Season, Truth for Life

He’s just a little guy, but he toddles along behind me. In his chubby hand are seeds. He drops one in each hole, sometimes pausing to stick a finger in and make that hole bigger.

“What will happen to the seed, Mommy?”

“Pretty soon, little roots will push out of it. And from the top, a little green stalk will come. That’s what pushes up through the ground to let us know a plant is there.”

“Oh. So the seed goes away?” Pause. “I like the seeds. This one looks like corn. That one’s so round.” Another pause. “Why do the seeds have to go away?”

I take a deep breath and file this away in my mind and heart. Oh yes – when he’s older, the discussions we can have about growth and change, death and life – how God has designed better to come!

“Honey, the seeds are just the beginning. God made them this way so they could give us plants and flowers and big, juicy tomatoes. They go away to make room for something bigger and better.”

Truth for Easter…truth for life.

And little boys? They’re like seeds – bundles of promise.

He’ll always be my baby

He says it over goodnight kisses…the two of us stuffed in his bright red firetruck bed, snuggled close and offering up prayers. “Mom, I’m really not a baby anymore.” My little man, almost four, looks at me with big, brown eyes and confirms what I’ve been wanting to deny. No escaping it.

Life happens quickly. And before we know it, those moments we think we’ll cherish forever become a distant memory.  Little feet get bigger.  Little laughs get deeper.  The wide-eyed wonder of seeing all the world for the first time dims a bit as routine and experience take over.

But he’ll always be my baby…

When he learns to read and count by fives…

He’ll always be my baby.

When the cape turns back into a blanket…tucked away in the closet for safekeeping.

He’ll always be my baby.

When the pacis finally find their resting place and the thumbs no longer wet and soggy…

He’ll always be my baby.

When his booboos don’t need mama’s kiss…

He’ll always be my baby.

When the playground isn’t his favorite place to go…

He’ll always be my baby.

When his footsteps become strong and confident…

He’ll always be my baby.

When he becomes aware of the world around him…and the silliness wears off a bit…

When the holes in the knees of his jeans are there because he bought them that way…

When daddy is so much more than just a favorite play toy…

And life takes on new meaning…deeper and true…

Stay tuned at the end of this month (the 29th) as we announce a NEW (to us) photo link-up that will give you the opportunity to show off your babies (even if they’re only babies to you).

Anticipation

There is an intense air of anticipation in our home right now. Turning the countdown blocks each morning brings us one day closer to Easter and the boys cannot wait.

Each night we read another story from the Jesus Storybook Bible.

The Prodigal Son…God loves us more than we can imagine, even when we’re far away.

The woman washing Jesus’ feet with her tears…we must humble our hearts before Him.

The Last Supper…Jesus as the Servant King.

And then the betrayal is mentioned. And the boys’ expressions change.

From anticipation to worry.

“They’re going to capture Jesus?!”

“Why are those men so angry?”

Tonight we read about Jesus’ night in the garden, and tomorrow the crucifixion.

Both boys can explain the real meaning of Easter – Jesus dying on the cross and all – but as we continue in the story, really pulling it apart, the meaning is sinking into their hearts.

The weight of what He did for us is starting to become a reality.

Which means the anticipation for His Resurrection will be even greater this year.

Share the story, no matter how young they are. Reveal His sacrifice and let it soak in their hearts.

It will make Resurrection Sunday even sweeter.

What do you do in your household to help your children understand His sacrifice and God’s ultimate rescue plan?

Resurrection Eggs

Are any of you out there football fans? Are your hubbies (or sons) football fans? Crazy Superbowl fanatics?

Those feelings of excitement and anticipation…

That’s what our household is like at Easter.

Easter is like the Superbowl around here. It’s an amazing thing and we are so excited that it happened! We celebrate in a lot of ways but one of my kiddos favorites is with the Resurrection Eggs. Never heard of them? They are awesome! And I especially love them because it offers hands-on teaching of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

These eggs help tell the story starting with Jesus riding the donkey to the empty tomb. With each egg, my kiddos get to hold a piece of symbolic history directly related to their heritage.

There are 12 eggs total. I purchased mine from Family Life but you could easily make your own kit. Their contents are as follows from egg 1 to 12:

  • Little Donkey
  • Silver Coins (3)
  • Cup
  • Praying hands
  • Leather Whip
  • Crown of Thorns
  • Cross with Nails
  • Die
  • Spear
  • Linen cloth
  • Stone
  • Empty

Every year, my kiddos wait anxiously for the hands-on story telling of Easter. And I love that now my son is helping to tell the story to his little sister. And he is so excited to share this tradition with his soon-to-be little brother or sister!

Tell me, what are some ways your family celebrates Easter? Any special traditions? I would LOVE to hear them!
