Look, Feel, and Taste Some Christmas

Ah, Christmas. We want to soak up the look, feel and taste of it, don’t we? And we want to help our young’uns do the same thing.

Here are a few (easy, simple!) ways to make meaningful Christmas memories on the outside while keeping your Christmas joy on the inside:

Soaking up the look: Each year, I buy a Christmas photo-frame ornament for each kiddo and put their cute mug in it. Since my kids are now 11 and 7, I’ve managed to rack up quite a collection! Each year I cannot wait to bust these babies out of the ornament boxes and drink in the “remember when’s” from Christmases past.

Soaking up the feel: The hard parts of life don’t take a holiday. Sometimes, they seem even more pronounced this time of year. It can seem all the love and joy of the season is MIA from your heart. For me, this more-than-usual busy season tries to crowd out my quiet time and have me neglect meeting with the Birthday Boy…the One we celebrate! Let’s commit to not make this mistake.

Also, giving for Jesus to those who can’t give back is a sure fire way to turbo-boost your Christmas spirit. A good place to start is here, here, or here.

Soaking up the taste: Some of my best mom/kiddo chats happen in the kitchen. Here are a couple of our favorite (and quick!) holiday treats:

My kids and I have been making these cuties since they were little bitty, and my 11 year olds still ask for them! Click here for the easy (and I mean easy!) recipe. If you don’t want to use a packaged peanut butter cookie mix, feel free to substitute in your own recipe.

Another easy favorite? These little bites of heaven:

These come from Family Fun and y’all, treats don’t get any easier than this! You can find the recipe here.

Whatever events you choose to attend, activities you choose to do, or goodies you choose to bake, I pray you keep your heart, soul, mind and strength focused on the Birthday Boy, our Savior Jesus. He is the be all end all of it all this season and always.

A New Name

My children are in the other room watching a show, as my husband and I sit and talk with this family we just met.

In between conversation covering a range of subjects like family Christmas traditions, church community, and raising children we talk about the realities of foster care and adoption.

I keep seeing a curly head peek around the corner to catch a glance of us. She’s shy, this sweet little one almost three years old, with a face like an angel.  Eventually she wanders into the room; but every time I look at her she covers her face and runs away. My husband and I are strangers, and she is unsure why we are there.

Her new mother and father apologize, telling us their daughter is wary of people she does not know. She thinks we might be there to take her away. She has already been in nine foster homes during her short life, and is afraid of having to leave again…she doesn’t quite understand that she has been adopted…that she is finally home. My heart hurts for the worldly wisdom and fear I see in this precious girl’s eyes.

Her brother is a handful of energy and fun; he shows us his toys, the Christmas tree, his room. He runs to and fro, an excited smile on his three year old face…he’s curious about us and our family and wants to play and laugh with us. I smile at his exuberance and obvious happiness. He knows he’s home.

I comment on the seriousness of her little girl, and the abounding joy of her little boy. She smiles, and we walk down the hallway, looking at family pictures as she tells me a story.

She said when they were transitioning these little ones from being their foster children and going through the process to adopt them, they gave them new names.  They also placed pictures of the children up from their life before so they could talk and grieve and ask questions as needed. All along the wall were pictures of their life now with their new forever family.

One day her little boy walked up to one of the “before” pictures and said “That’s me, when I was Timmy and nobody loved me” and then walked over to one of the “after” pictures and said “That’s me, now that I’m Bobby and YOU and God love me!” **

My husband and I looked at each other with tears in our eyes, as the full impact of what he had said hit us.

He had been given a new name

He had been shown that he was loved

He now lived in perfect joy

And as this Christmas season passes by, I want to remember the beautifully profound truths found in this little boy’s words as I reflect on the celebration of the birth of my Savior…won’t you join me in doing the same?

Give me a BOY’S Christmas! (By Laura Lee Groves)

It’s a boy’s Christmas for me!

We adults make life so complicated sometimes. Kids reduce everything down to what’s really important.

What if I took that boy’s simplicity and applied it to my Christmas celebration?

Give me…

Eyes that are bigger than my stomach, just like my boys at Christmas dinner. That way, I’ll long for a limitless supply of You.

The ability to look beyond the bow. To my boys, it matters not if the gift is in a bag or wrapped in newspaper. Oh, to have eyes to see to the heart of a matter – and the heart of a loved one.

Focus on one thing when chaos ensues around me. Surrounded by wrapping paper, chattering brothers, play swords and Legos galore, they block it all out and zone in on the Matchbox truck in front of them. The world can just go away for all they care at that moment. Lord, may I zone in on You amidst the chaos.

Creativity to see the joy in the wrapping. I watch my boys play for hours with a box and realize that there’s a lot of wonder in what my adult mind sees as scrap. Heighten my creative senses so I can see possibility.

Joy in making and giving. My boys love to do. When they give a gift they’ve made, there’s delight on their faces. Bring back that pleasure that comes from making and giving – the giving of myself.

Childlike wonder. It’s hard to put into words, but you know it when you see it on those precious faces. It’s there when they gaze at the manger scene or look deep into the night sky. Oh, to look at Your world again that way, Father!

Most of all, give me the ability to model these for my boys. May they see in me what’s really important, valued, lasting.

Armed with wonder, focus, creativity, and joy, may they undertake the greatest quest for the Source of all blessing.

What have your boys taught you about Christmas?

Reindeer, Santa, or Snowmen

With all of the hubbub of this season , it’s easy to get distracted. I have really good intentions. Get gifts done and made before December, craft something special each day with my kiddos, get cards sent out early, bake something scrumptious every weekend, you know, all the important stuff.

What? What do mean I didn’t mention the whole reason for this wonderfully celebrated season? Sure I did! It’s right….

Oh, I didn’t??

Well, that just goes without saying, doesn’t it? I mean, my guys know it’s to celebrate Jesus’ birth, I’ve told them.

Just tonight my youngest asked my husband what his favorite Christmas thing was, “Reindeer, Santa, or Snowmen?”

What? You don’t see Jesus among that list?

Of course you do! He’s there next to…oh wait…

I thought for sure He was listed there. He should have been first on my list but with all of my distractions, He got shuffled to the bottom.

How do I fix this major blunder on my part? I mean, it’s not that we don’t know it’s all about Him, but when Santa gets listed (which my kiddos know is not real), well, it lends me to think that maybe someone else is holding the VIP card that shouldn’t.

Lord, please show me how to bring it all back to You.

What’s that? A Birthday party?!

Yes, a birthday party to celebrate Jesus’ birth! I’ll bump all of the other “stuff” and focus soley on WHO we are celebrating.

And my kiddos couldn’t be more excited!

I know it’s easy to get caught up in making sure you have gifts for everyone on your list.

But ask yourself, what gift are you giving to the most important person at CHRISTmas?
