A few weeks ago our sermon was on James 1 on enduring during trials. It’s a portion of Scripture I’ve been familiar with for some time, and a passage that has ministered to me throughout my walk with Christ. It might have been a Scripture I might have even skimmed over if I was reading it on my own, because my pride would convince me that I had already gleaned enough from that passage. (Frustrating how my pride is evident even in my quiet time.)
However, the Word always is fresh. It’s always relevant. It’s always applicable.
James 1:2 – 6 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”
Some of you know that our family has faced various trials this year, with a job loss and family health struggles. (As so many of us are familiar with…) All in all, I thought in my mind that I had handled our “lemons” pretty well. While my faith has persevered through these testings, I have failed greatly in the process!
Thankfully, I serve a Savior who chooses to forgive my unrighteousness and gives me second chances, and third chances, and 50th chances… Trials and testings are part of this life, and so there are opportunities daily to apply these truths, and grow in my Christian walk.
How about your lemons? Are you allowing the trials and testings in your life to be a blessing? Are you allowing them to grow and mature your faith? Are you seeking worldly wisdom or wisdom from the Creator of the Universe?

Welcome to my monthly feature, “Backseat Conversations” – A car ride, a captive audience and a chance to make the most of the time we are given…real-life conversations with my boys about life and faith.
As if I needed further proof that little ears are always listening…
“Mommy, what does perish mean?”
“Perish?”
“Yeah, in the song they just said perish – what does it mean?”
We’re listening to the Rizers CD – the song is John 3:16 set to awesome rock music.
“Well, perish means to die.”
Not my best answer ever but I wasn’t sure how much he was looking for. He wanted more.
“Perish just means to die?”
“Well, no. The song is talking about what happens when someone who doesn’t have Jesus in their heart dies. Perish means they are separated from God forever.”
“Where do they go?”
Wow, this four-year-old likes deep conversations!
“Hell is where people are separated from God forever. Heaven is where people are with God forever.”
“When we go to heaven, how do we get down?
Oh boy, now we’re going in a whole different direction…
My two take aways from that day?
*My boys are listening to everything AND talking about it. It is more important than ever that what they are hearing falls into these categories:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Philippians 4:8
*There is no need to back away when our sons ask deep questions. God will give us the words and wisdom if we are just willing to engage in conversation with our children.
