Welcome to my monthly feature, “Backseat Conversations” – A car ride, a captive audience and a chance to make the most of the time we are given…real-life conversations with my boys about life and faith.
“If I had a REAL Buzz Lightyear costume, I could fly up to Jesus.”
Oh boy, now that is some worrisome theology!
“Buddy, that’s not how we get to Jesus.”
Unless, of course, you don’t make it through the “flight.” Obviously I didn’t tell him that part.
“So how can we get to Jesus?”
“Well, you have to Jesus to come into your heart. Then, when you die, you will be in heaven and meet Jesus.”
“But I don’t want to die on the cross.”
Mental note: more explanation required about death.
“You don’t have to die on the cross, but everyone will die at some point.”
“And then we’ll be in the sky with Jesus?”
“Yep, buddy.”
Because HE is the only way to truly go to “infinity and beyond.”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 (NIV)
God provides these moments to help us meet our children where they are. Who knew Toy Story could open up a conversation about salvation?! There are SO many opportunities like this if we are LISTENING and WILLING TO ENGAGE.
What strange or unexpected things have opened the door to faith conversations with your boys?

I love this new column Erin! So many times I view the captive audience in a slightly different way…quiet time for mommy! I turn the radio up and enjoy listening to them sing rather than scream! But you’re right…God gives us all opportunities to connect with our boy’s heart and we need to be sure to take them when we can.

I’ve so been there as well! But my boy tends to talk even through the music so I’ve had to adapt and God is blessing those conversations!

Yep, we’ve had the beginnings of conversations like these recently. Unfortunately, I don’t feel like I handled it well.

I’m sure you handled it as well as you could…it’s hard when you are hit with an impromptu question!

Oh Sara! I can’t even count the number of times I’ve missed an opportunity at one of these kinds of conversations. Thankfully we serve a God of grace and second chances – praying for you!

We were having a drought last summer and all the fish in the creek near my in-laws house had gone belly up. This really disappointed my 5 year old son. He loved going down there and looking at the fish and throwing rocks in the creek. One day as we were driving out to their house it started raining. Suddenly my son yells out excitedly from the backseat, “Mommy!!! It’s raining!!! That means all of the fish in Pawpaw’s creek are going to raise from the dead!!! Like JESUS!!!” This then led to a discussion about why that wasn’t possible, how Jesus is the only one that can be risen from the dead, etc. It was pretty precious though and I couldn’t help but smile and just be happy that the gospel was indeed sinking in!

I actually posted a blog yesterday about this very topic! For some reason, we seem to have a lot of these conversations at breakfast. My son was very curious about how Jesus made people. He didn’t understand how Jesus could make people when He was on Earth. Explaining the Trinity to a 3-year-old–that was tough!
Cute post!

Jennifer – even just explaining that God is everywhere is so hard! The Trinity is a whole other level of tough to explain…
