Praying for a Pearl – A Guest Post by Teri Lynne Underwood

Today we’ve invited a friend of ours, the mother of a GIRL (shock! gasp!) to guest post.

Teri Lynne Underwood, of Pleasing to You and Scripture Dig, is raising an amazing girl.  Today she’s sharing with us, mothers of boys and future mothers-n-law, what she prays for us as we raise our boys knowing that one day, her little girl will grow up…and meet a man…

Long before my daughter was born I began praying for her future husband.  I prayed that he would cherish her and love the Lord with an undivided heart.   I asked the Lord to give him a passion for the Word and that he be a man of integrity.  And I prayed that his parents would love and cherish him.

Gradually, I began to realize a need to pray for my future son-in-law’s mother.  As I looked at the many little boys in our church and in my daughter’s school, the Lord opened my eyes to the unique relationship between mother and son … and the way that relationship could ultimately affect my daughter’s marriage.

Over time I developed a prayer for this special woman … the one who is raising the man who will care for my daughter when she leaves our home, the one who will be my grandchildren’s other grandmother, the one who will play a key role in my daughter’s life.

“Father, I don’t know her.  I don’t know her heart or her background.  I don’t know what she’s been through and what she’s facing today.  I don’t know if she’s married or divorced or a single mom.  I don’t know anything about her.  But You do.  And so I trust You in this … that You are at work, even today, preparing the heart of this woman to love my daughter, her son’s future wife.

I pray that she is a woman of prayer, daily – even minute-by-minute – placing her cares and concerns at Your feet.   May she see Your faithfulness in all things, even tragedy, and teach her son to trust You at all times.  I pray she loves Your Word and spends time daily building a relationship with You through Scripture.   As she spends time in Your Word, I pray that her son sees that a woman who loves the Lord is true beauty – the kind that doesn’t fade or change but grows more precious as time passes by.

I pray for this daughter of Yours, the mother of my future son-in-law.  Give her a longing for things that are true and noble and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8) and a gentle spirit (1 Peter 3:4).  May her manner be tender and compassionate (Ephesians 4:32) and her heart be focused on the “better part” (Luke 10:42).

Most of all, I pray that she is raising a son who sees You through her … and that when the day comes that he meets my daughter that his mother’s prayers will be answered as well.   Amen.”

I’ve got a girl … a beautiful, creative, passionate, precious girl.  One day she’ll have a mother-in-law and that woman’s son will be entrusted with the care of that which is precious to my husband and me, our daughter.  And so I pray for her because she’s going to be a significant part of my daughter’s life … and because she’s raising the man who will one day hold my daughter’s heart.

Yes, I pray for my future daughter in laws. I have 3 boys, so I pray that they will be women after God’s own heart, and that they will appreciate the men I raised. My MIL and I had a talk about this and she said that she prayed for her son’s future wife, and is blessed to have me. I think I am fortunate to have her, and I pray that my Daugher in law and I have the same kind of relationship we have.

    Teri Lynne!

Everytime I think I couldn’t love you more, you up and make me love you more! Years ago, a mentor mom of mine encouraged me to start praying now (when my babies were really babies) for their future spouses. I never thought about their spouses’ parents. THIS is a real encouraging word today, my friend! Thanks for stopping by our neck of the woods to hear it! Love you dearly!
